Care outside the hospital walls

Chris, a former NHS CEO has worked as a senior consultant healthcare specialist with Healthcare UK based at the UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT) for the last eleven years. He is an experienced executive coach and mentor and has a passion for improving health and care worldwide.

Chris has worked with hundreds of NHS and commercial health and care organisations in the UK to take their export offer to operators, developers, investors, governments and health services in the target markets of India, China, SE Asia, the Middle East and other countries.  He has been responsible for the development of a detailed set of international UK offers, including digital health, NHS Innovation, clinical services (most recently diabetes, oncology, cardiac services and mental health), training and education and healthcare infrastructure.

Chris worked for 25 years as a senior leader in the NHS both in a NHS Trust and as a NHS commissioner. Chris also worked in a predecessor of NHS England (the NHS Executive) and in 2012 was seconded to the then Department of Health to develop NHS Global (which led to the creation of Healthcare UK).

John Bolland is the Service Lead for the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) Service. He supports and champions IPS colleagues and people who use the service across the whole Trust. John started in the NHS as an office temp in an Adult Psychology Clinic. He experienced my own mental health difficulties but with love, support and a good admin job, got through some tough times! He then worked in the brilliant South Tyneside Assertive Outreach Team as a Support Worker, before moving to the Newcastle Early Intervention in Psychosis Team (EIP).

Newcastle EIP supported the development of IPS and in 2019 a proper, dedicated IPS Employment Support Service was launched. Since then, the has grown from a small group of dedicated staff to a team of over 40 exceptional Employment Specialists. He loves his job, meeting and working with amazing people, businesses and NHS colleagues.

His area of professional interest is actively changing culture to reduce stigma and discrimination. This will increase good employment practice, which will improve health and productivity, meaning everybody wins!

A graduate of Aberdeen University (BSc) and Lancaster University (PhD) in Psychology and Human factors respectively. Ian also has a clinical psychology degree from the University of Newcastle (MSc) and is an honorary professor at Bradford University. 

He worked for 4 years in one of the first Cognitive Therapy training courses in the UK.  In 1997, Ian set up the Older People’s Psychology Service in Newcastle and established the first dedicated Challenging Behaviour Community Service in the NHS.  Alongside his work as an NHS clinician, he have maintained strong research and teaching portfolios. Ian has written over 200 articles and five books.  

He has additional qualifications in Interpersonal therapy and Neuropsychology, and is a member of the Division of Neuropsychology, British Psychological Society. Ian is regarded as one of the national experts in dementia care, particularly in relation to behaviours that challenge. He has recently authored the British Psychological Society’s guidance on managing agitation in dementia. 

Ian currently combines his NHS work with his work as a consultant in elite sport, where he is the mental skills coach for Burnley F.C. who play in the English Premier League. 

Carole Kaplan was born in South Africa and her career has centred on Child Psychiatry in the UK. She led a child Psychiatry service for many years and have been a Group Medical Director for Specialist services in Cumbria, Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Trust (CNTW).  

Carole’s national work at Board level has included the National Association of Child Contact Centres; Family Mediation Standards Board; Voice of the Child; Advisory Board on Family Law; Council on Tribunals; Children Act Advisory Committee; NHS Litigation Authority (Resolution); Association of Child and Adolescent Mental health professionals and others.  

At she is the Trustee of Research Into Practice Committee (Dartington Trust); Mental Health Matters and am a Commissioner for the Archbishops report ‘Love Matters’ reporting on Families and Households.  As Director of Trust Innovation since clinical retirement, Carole have worked with a growing team to support significant and outstanding development in clinical and corporate mental health care delivery within CNTW. This continues to drive trust improvement in all departments.  

Our improvement work has attracted national and international attention and we have worked with many NHS trusts, other healthcare providers and other national organisations and charities to design and improve service provision both in the UK and in other countries.

Vincent Sai is the CEO and Partner of Modality Partnership, an award-winning large-scale NHS GP super partnership that operates primary health care and community services across the UK. He has significant expertise in primary care, population health management and large-scale transformation in public and private health sectors in the UK and internationally. Since joining in 2015, he has overseen significant diversification and expansion of Modality’s national footprint, turning the partnership into the largest of its kind in the UK. Vincent is the only non-clinical owner in a 130-GP partner strong national partnership.  

Prior to Modality, he was Chief Executive for Aetna Health Management Services, and served private and public sector clients from across the US, Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea and Indonesia at Deloitte Consulting. 

Vincent was recently awarded Honorary Fellowship by the Royal College of General Practitioners for his outstanding contribution to General Practice. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and Australia and New Zealand, a Health Executive in Residence at the Global Business School for Health, University College London (UCL), Visiting Fellow at the School of Health and Social Care, London South Bank University (LSBU) and expert guest lecturer at the School of Health Sciences, University of Brighton.
