Powering Innovation in Heart Disease Services

Brilliant new heart hospitals:

Working with overseas healthcare providers

The UK’s leading NHS heart disease hospitals want to work with overseas healthcare providers to achieve success in CVD services, with 75 years’ experience of innovation in research based clinical pathways, the most advanced science and excellent training, equipment and digital systems.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death globally. An estimated 20.5 million people died from CVDs in 2019, representing the leading cause of all global deaths at over one third. Of these deaths, 85% were due to heart attack and stroke.

38% of premature deaths (before age 70) from Non-Communicable Diseases were caused by CVDs in 2015. Ischaemic heart disease was the leading cause of premature death among all NCDs in most countries for both men and women. 80% of these are preventable.

Testing and using cutting edge treatments

  • Minimally invasive key hole surgery for Mitrial Valve disease
  • AI driven robotic transcranial doppler (TCD) ultrasound system monitoring blood flow velocities, making open aortic arch surgery safer
  • Balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA), a successful treatment option for patients with a rare form of pulmonary hypertension reducing symptoms more safely
  • Using diamonds to cool hearts to help correct abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia) making the ablation procedure quicker and safer
  • Heart transplants using pioneering donations after circulatory death (DCD), increasing the number of lives saved
  • Using virtual reality to look at a patient’s heart to plan surgery
